Soon after graduating high-school, DJ first picked up a guitar for the metal outfit Mercenary, who had
a short but strong run in the late eighties. He followed this with a four-year stint in Verdugo, a band for which
he wrote over a dozen songs.
His younger brother Tim is the co-founder and vocalist for local thrash-metal mainstays
Vagrant. Over the course of eight years, DJ began as one of their road crew
members, and eventually became the band's manager, taking them all over Southern California and beyond.
Bassist Mike McGarvey has been a personal friend of the entire Vagrant organization from the beginning, so when StoneBlue
put out the call to audition second guitarists, DJ was quickly put on the short-list.
